Wool Pole Protector

$11.00

Frustrated by the plastic waste littering our hill country sheep and beef farm from planting poles, we knew there had to be a better solution. As it turned out, the answer was right in front of us.

Trialed over the last 3 years and twice sold out already in 2025. We have our last 2,000 Wool Pole Protectors ready for your land. Just place them over your pole, staple at the top, keep stock out and away you go.

No more plastic wraps. Just wool — good for the paddock, good for the farmer.

For best results we recommend planting in accordance with best practice guidelines which includes excluding stock.

Applying what we already know about wool, we bring to you the Wool Pole Protector - good for the paddock and good for the farmer.

Why wool?

  • Wool is durable, it can be bent over 20,000 times before breaking.

  • Wool can store and release moisture as needed.

  • Wool is a sustainable and renewable resource.

  • Wool is 100% biodegradable.

Wool Pole Protectors are 1.6m high and manufactured using high micron fleece wool to ensure they are as tough as possible. Every Wool Pole Protector is proudly made and manufactured in NZ.

Believe in wool? Believe in this. Give them a go this year and let the results speak for themselves.

  • Frustrated by the plastic waste littering our hill country sheep and beef farm from planting poles, we knew there had to be a better solution. As it turned out, the answer was right in front of us.

Since 2022, we’ve been trialing Wool Pole Protectors, and they’ve proven their worth even under record rainfall and severe weather events, standing up to the challenges without issue.

In 2023, we expanded our trials, self-funding tests on 15 hill country farms across New Zealand, evaluating various wool types. These trials span regions including Northland, King Country, Taupo, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Wellington, Canterbury, and Te Anau.

Following feedback and adjustments to improve performance and longevity, our Wool Pole Protectors are now more robust than ever. Today, they remain under formal trials at over 30 sites across New Zealand, including collaborations with six regional councils.

  • For best results we recommend adhering to the installation instructions and planting poles in accordance with best practice. This includes ensuring you have the right pole, for the right place and using either an A or B grade pole. Correct stock management is also essential, cattle should be excluded from pole plantings for at least the first 18months.

WPP (and plastic alternatives) are not cattle proof and should not be treated as such.

For more information, visit The New Zealand Poplar & Willow Research Trust

  • Please ensure you read instructions carefully and follow them correctly.

We recommend the use of an applicator to avoid any chance of snagging during initial application however it is not necessary.

WPP do need to be stapled in place as they will sag/ slide down the pole if it is not done.

  • Please note: Our Wool Pole Protectors are now thicker than what was originally trialed, extending the longevity .

Wool Pole Protectors are still currently on trial, however our initial trial demonstrated that around the 18-24month mark degradation started to occur along sections of the Wool Pole Protector. Degradation will occur faster along the bottom with any part that has direct contact with the soil.

It is important to note that how long your Wool Pole Protector lasts comes down to your stock management & climatic conditions. For example: Degradation rates occur faster in hotter and wetter climates compared to dry and cold.

  • Yes, we have been trialing WPP in various forms since 2022 and they have provided great results for poles and single leader trees.

Regrettably, we do not offer custom guards for native plants due to the unsatisfactory results from our initial design and trials.
